The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This route offers a more gradual ascent, making it a good option for trekkers seeking a slightly easier climb. It’s also one of the less crowded routes, providing a quieter and more remote hiking experience. The Rongai Route passes through a variety of landscapes, from lush forests to barren alpine deserts, before joining the Marangu Route for the final summit push.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

Distance: 8 km
Duration: 3-4 hours
Altitude: Simba Camp at 2,625 meters (8,612 feet) above sea level

Start your trek through cultivated farmland and pine forest. The trail gently ascends to Simba Camp, where you’ll enjoy a quiet and peaceful first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

Distance: 7 km
Duration: 3-4 hours
Altitude: Second Cave at 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) above sea level

Continue your ascent with views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields as you head towards Second Cave. This is a great day for acclimatization and enjoying the stunning scenery.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Distance: 9 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Altitude: Kikelewa Camp at 3,675 meters (12,057 feet) above sea level

Leave the heather and moorland behind as you climb towards Kikelewa Camp. The landscape becomes more rugged, with stunning views of the Kenyan plains.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Distance: 7 km
Duration: 3-4 hours
Altitude: Mawenzi Tarn at 4,315 meters (14,160 feet) above sea level

Enjoy a short but steep climb up to Mawenzi Tarn, located at the foot of Mawenzi Peak. This camp offers spectacular views and is a key acclimatization point.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Distance: 8 km

Altitude: Kibo Hut at 4,720 meters (15,486 feet) above sea level

Traverse the lunar desert between Mawenzi and Kibo as you make your way to Kibo Hut. This day offers a gradual ascent, allowing for further acclimatization before the summit push.

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Distance: 22 km
Duration: 12-15 hours
Altitude: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) and Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) above sea level

Begin your summit attempt in the early morning hours. Reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise and celebrate your achievement before descending to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Distance: 20 km
Duration: 5-7 hours
Altitude: Marangu Gate at 1,860 meters (6,102 feet) above sea level

Descend through the moorland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, you’ll celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
